No more mortar falling out of the ridge.

Ridge and verge tiles have traditionally been bedded on mortar. Over the years the mortar cracks, washes out and lets the tiles rock loose, and in a gale they come off. A dry ridge system fixes each ridge and hip tile mechanically over a ventilated roll, and a dry verge system caps the gable edge with clipped units instead of mortar.

We fit dry ridge and dry verge on new roofs and re-roofs as standard, and retro-fit them to existing roofs. Where a traditional bedded ridge suits the roof better, we re-bed ridge and hip tiles properly instead.

Ridge tile repairs and re-bedding, hip tile repairs and verge tile repairs are all part of the same job. You get a free quote and our 10 year guarantee.

Straight answers about your roof

What is a dry ridge?
A system that fixes ridge and hip tiles mechanically, with clips and a ventilated roll, instead of relying on mortar. It does not crack and wash out.
Can you fit dry verge to an existing roof?
Yes. We retro-fit dry verge to existing gables, and fit it as standard on new roofs.
Do you still re-bed ridges in mortar?
Yes, where it suits the roof. We re-bed ridge and hip tiles properly.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. Our work carries a 10 year guarantee.
Does a dry ridge replace all loft ventilation?
The ridge provides one part of the ventilation arrangement. Air also needs a suitable route into and through the roof, so we check the eaves and insulation position before deciding how the ridge should ventilate.
Why can a verge cap loosen after installation?
A cap needs the right component for the tile and a firm fixing into suitable timber. We inspect the starter, batten ends and attachment points to identify why the edge is moving before refitting it.

Step by step

Securing ridges and gable edges

  1. Check system compatibility. We identify the covering profile, ridge shape and roof pitch. Verge components must fit the tile courses rather than being forced over unsuitable edges.
  2. Lift loose fittings and mortar. Old bedding and unstable caps are removed under controlled access. Ridge tiles are checked individually before any are selected for reuse.
  3. Create sound fixing points. Ridge battens and verge batten ends are assessed and renewed where required. Mechanical fittings need secure timber beneath the visible caps.
  4. Fit the weathering components. The ridge roll is formed over clean, dry tile surfaces and the verge starters positioned. Ventilation openings remain clear as the components are fitted.
  5. Secure each fitting. Ridge unions, screws and verge fixings are installed in sequence. End caps and hip terminations are checked for support, alignment and drainage.

Planning ridge and verge installation

A simple ridge conversion often fits into a day once safe access is in place. Working along several hips and gables takes longer, especially where old bedding needs careful removal. Brittle ridge tiles or short, decayed batten ends add replacement work before the system can be attached. Scaffold layout affects how easily each edge can be reached. Dry conditions are needed for the ridge roll's adhesive edges, and strong winds interrupt work at the apex.

Selecting fittings that suit the roof edge

Dry ridge components must work with the roof covering and ridge tile profile. A ventilated roll and the correct unions create a joined system, with mechanical attachment doing the holding. Reusing sound ridge tiles preserves their weathered colour, while replacements offer a consistent line where old tiles have cracked. Hip details also need suitable support for cut tiles. Our pitched roofing service considers those edges alongside the covering, so a new fixing system is not attached to weak supporting material.

Dry verge can use individual caps or a suitable continuous arrangement. The tile type, batten projection and existing bargeboard decide which detail fits neatly. A traditional roof may call for a bedded finish, with mechanical fixing incorporated as required by its specification. Where the boards beneath the gable edge are worn, fascia and soffit work can be coordinated with the verge installation. Resolving the backing first gives the new edge a firm fixing and avoids having to dismantle it for later repairs.

Your price

Pricing ridge and verge conversions

The length of the ridge alone does not describe the work. We count the roof edges and inspect what the new fixings will attach to.

  • Ridge, hip and verge lengths
  • Number of gables and roof intersections
  • Condition of ridge tiles selected for reuse
  • Batten renewal and supporting timber
  • Compatible system and termination pieces
  • Access over porches or conservatories

Your quote states which edges are included and which existing fittings will remain. Ask for a free assessment and quote for the complete edge detail.

Aftercare

Checking the new roof edge

From below, watch for a cap that has moved out of line or a ridge end that looks different after a storm. Do not block ventilation openings with foam or mortar. If a later gutter or aerial job needs access beside the new components, make the installer aware of them. Retain the specification for reference under our 10 year guarantee and report loose parts before they affect neighbouring fittings.
